1 Goal, 99% Pass Accuracy: Axel Witsel shows Arsenal and Liverpool why he is worth signing

Arsenal and Liverpool should both take note of Axel Witsel's performance for Zenit last night.

Axel Witsel produced a dominant showing in the Europa League to help Zenit St Petersburg beat Torino.

The Belgian international's masterclass highlighted why he would be an ideal summer signing for two club's in particular, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Witsel scored in the 2-0 victory for Andre Villas-Boas' side, and managed more touches (101) than any player on the pitch.

He recorded an astounding 99 per cent pass completion rate, and managed three tackles, which was the highest in the Zenit team on the night.

Alongside former Manchester City player Javi Garcia in midfield, Witsel helped Zenit dominate the game with 62 per cent of possession and put themselves in a strong position to qualify for the Europa League quarter-finals.

Here's a look at why two of the Premier League's top clubs should take a look at the 26-year-old.

The Gunners have been crying out for a top level defensive midfielder for several seasons now, and may have unearthed one with Francis Coquelin.

The Frenchman is however not enough for them to put their trust in considering his relative inexperience, and Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta being in their 30s, may yet renew Arsene Wenger to make a splash on a player in the position approaching his peak.

If Arsenal want to win now, and make a push in the Champions League next season, Witsel would be an excellent signing.

Liverpool won't be able to find a true replacement for Steven Gerrard, and nor is Witsel that kind of player. What he can do however is fill the defensive midfield position Brendan Rodgers played Gerrard in last season, and at the beginning of this year, with less success.

Doubts also remain over the long-term future, and fitness consistency of Lucas Leiva, while Emre Can has been showing he is just as important to the side in defence.

Witsel can be a strong presence for the Reds, and enable more creative players like Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling to have a greater impact.
