Worrying statistics behind Cesc Fabregas form

Fabregas Chelsea

The Chelsea midfielder has suffered a much harder second half of the season than the first, but it's not a new problem.

There’s no denying that Cesc Fabregas has been a wonderful signing for Chelsea.

The former Arsenal midfielder hit the ground running for Jose Mourinho’s side, providing assist after assist that have helped Chelsea to the top of the Premier League table.

In fact, such is the Spaniards prowess at laying on goals for his teammates that he was quickly approaching Thierry Henry’s long-standing record for the most assists in a league season, with only half of the campaign gone.

However, Fabregas has so far suffered an indifferent second half of the season, failing to carry his fine form for the league leaders into 2015.

It now appears that this is a common trend for the former Barcelona man, with Opta revealing that in each of the last six seasons, Fabregas has been involved in fewer league goals and assists after passing the halfway mark.

For example, in 2009/10 he was involved in 19 goals and assists in the first half of the season, but then just nine after the New Year. Fast forward to 2011/12 and there is a similar trend, with him being involved in 13 goals and assists in the first half of the season but just four following the turn of the year.

This season has gone the same way. While he hit the ground running to be involved in 15 goals and assists, he has only been involved in two assists since then.

Some have suggested that it is simply burn out for the hugely influential Spaniard, which may be a factor given Mourinho’s relative lack of rotation in the squad. Regardless of that though, the stats prove worrying for Chelsea fans as they seek to win the title once again.
