Report: De Girolamo would prefer move to Sunderland

Sunderland are reportedly ahead in the race to sign a talented Italian youth international.

The Sunderland Echo has reported that the Black Cats are well in the race to sign teenager Diego De Girolamo at the end of the season.

The Italy under-20 international is set to leave Sheffield United at the end of this season and the Echo’s report claims Sunderland have scouted him six times, ahead of a possible move.

Sunderland are a huge British club and a great place for any younger player to develop, but the paper’s report claims Juventus are interested in offering him a path back to Italy, with an unnamed Spanish club also thought to be interested.

The paper also claims that the player would prefer to stay in the UK because of family roots in Derbyshire.

The defining factor over whether Sunderland get him or not could depend on the fortunes of the side over the rest of the season.

He reportedly has an offer on the table to go and play for a top flight European club and that could be difficult to ignore if Sunderland lose their fight to prevent a drop down into the Championship.
