Stiliyan Petrov has started working with Aston Villa as a first-team coach.

The former Bulgaria international returned to the Villans in a coaching capacity last week, as confirmed on the club’s official website.

The 35-year-old retired midfielder will work with the Premier League club’s first team under the management of Tim Sherwood.

The Bulgarian played for Villa from 2006 to 2012, when he diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

Petrov was forced to retire from professional football in May 2013, and he has now been given the chance to work in the game again.

Earlier today, Petrov started his new role with Villa and was spotted in training, as shown in the picture above.

Villa are struggling for survival in the Premier League at the moment and are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.

Sherwood’s side are currently 17th in the league table with 25 points from 28 matches, just three points above the relegation zone.

Villa, who have progressed to the FA Cup semi-finals, will take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Saturday.
