A resilient 10-man Paris Saint-Germain dumped Chelsea out of the Champions League on away goals after a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, as Cesc Fabregas produced another concerning performance.
After a 1-1 draw in the first-leg of their last-16 tie in Paris, Chelsea appeared to get the upper hand in the opening 45 minutes when PSG’s star man Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for a foul on Oscar.
Gary Cahill’s goal nine minutes from time looked to be sending the Blues through until their former defender David Luiz thumped home a header to send the match into extra-time, before Jose Mourinho’s side went ahead once again in the 96th-minute through an Eden Hazard spot-kick following Thiago Silva’s handball.
The Brazilian made amends six minutes before the end, however, with another excellent header to send the French side into the quarter-finals and leave Chelsea lamenting their failure to take advantage of the extra man.
The Premier League club needed their star difference-makers to turn up on the night, but Fabregas was one of those kept quiet throughout the 90 minutes, failing to pull the strings in midfield like he’s capable of.
After a hot start to the season, which saw him smash various assist records, the former Arsenal captain’s production has dropped off in dramatic fashion in recent weeks, and it’s clear that fans are starting to get somewhat concerned.
The Spaniard is far from a hindrance to his side at present but, judging from the Twitter reaction to his latest outing, he is certainly not his incisive best either.
Midfield was poor, Cesc was nowhere to ne found. Attacking was minimal, zero shooting ambition. #CFC— Lehakwe Tloti (@lehakwe_) March 11, 2015
Am I the only #CFC fan that thinks Fabregas has been very poor in recent weeks, doesn't look half the player he did a few months ago.— Dan Bonnington (@BonningtonSport) March 11, 2015
Seems like Fabregas and Costa form has slipped, so the whole team does worse. Need to be less reliant #CFC— Matt MacCallum (@MattJamesMac) March 11, 2015
Cesc is proper Chelsea..the League and League Cup will have to do this year..Sort out the weak spots in summer and go again #CFC— Craigos (@Craigos0) March 11, 2015
