Roberto Di Matteo very nearly led Schalke to a famous win against Real Madrid last night.
Last night saw Schalke 04 press Real Madrid all the way at the Bernabeu in what looked like an impossible dream, almost becoming reality.
The German side were outplayed in the first-leg - losing 2-0 in Gelsenkirchen. But they went at a fragile Real Madrid side from the off. In the end they won the game 4-3 and were very close to winning the tie on away goals. As it is, they went out 5-4 on aggregate.
Of course it would not have been a surprise if they had sent Real tumbling, when you consider who the Schalke boss is.
Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo knows something about taking on the big dogs in the Champions League. He took perhaps Chelsea's weakest team since Roman Abramovich's takeover to Champions League glory in 2012.
Well played Schalke and Di Matteo— Diego Poyet (@diegopoyet7) March 10, 2015
Of course Diego's dad is Gus Poyet, current Sunderland boss and former Chelsea team-mate of Di Matteo's, so that may suggest the reason why the West Ham midfielder felt the need to congratulate the Italian.
But the truth is, most footballers and football fans were impressed by the way RDM took it to the reigning Champions League holders - and were collectively gutted when they just fell short.
