Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas insisted that teammates acknowledge the angry fans after losing 4-3 to Schalke.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas bore the brunt of the crowd’s hostility for his woeful performance in Tuesday evening’s 4-3 Champions League loss to Schalke, but despite being the target for slurs and insults throughout the night Casillas demanded his teammates applaud the Santiago Bernabeu crowd following the match.
Following one of their worst losses in European competition since 2000, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and a host of other Real Madrid stars were making a beeline to the dressing room before they were stopped by Casillas, who demanded that they return to the pitch and applaud the fans who had been berating the team for seemingly 90 minutes.
The video, courtesy of Spanish publication AS shows Casillas bravely insisting on facing the fans in spite of their anger vented in spite of Madrid advancing in the Champions League.
The players did move back toward the pitch, briefly applauding the fans before turning on their heels and heading back to the dressing room.
Following the match, as the players left the Santiago Bernabeu parking garage, they were met with insults and jeers from the crowd lining the sidewalk with only Pepe and Marcelo applauded for their efforts.
