A 28-year-old Dutch winger, Elia has previously turned out for Juventus, Hamburg and FC Twente, and is signed to Ronald Koeman’s side on loan until the end of the season. The Saints have the option to purchase him outright throughout the loan deal and it is expected that he will leave Bremen in the summer, regardless of which club takes him permanently.
He has made nine appearances for the South Coast club since signing in January, scoring two goals - both in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle. He is unfortunate to have arrived at a time when the Saints have dipped below their usually high standards, but there is no doubt that he has been one of the better performing players in recent weeks.
Due to his impressive run of games, Elia has been linked with making the move to St Mary’s Stadium a permanent one, as per VI, and Bremen general manager Thomas Eichin has told Bild that the Saints are satisfied with his performances enough to open transfer negotiations.
“I’ve watched all the matches of Elijah at Southampton,” Eichin is quoted as saying. “He plays everything and doing fine. We are in contact with his agent. Southampton is satisfied.”
The article states that Elia will be leaving the club in the summer and that a number of other unnamed Premier League sides have shown an interest in the winger, should Southampton refuse their right to purchase him first.
