Newcastle United are tracking FC Basel defender Fabian Schar, according to a report in the Chronicle.
Schar's contract at the Swiss club expires this summer and Newcastle apparently feel he could be a bargain buy.
The Magpies have been building up their scouting networks in Switzerland and they seem to believe that Schar is the pick of the current crop in the country.
The 22-year-old centre-back is composed in possession, whilst also being a commanding defender and he looks one of the finest prospects across Europe.
Impact of Schar's signing for Newcastle?
If Newcastle were able to capture Schar, it would be one of their more notable additions over recent years and signify their intent ahead of the next campaign.
The youngster has been linked to some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Arsenal, in recent times in the Guardian and Newcastle could consider it quite a coup if they did manage to land him.
His arrival would be needed, too. Newcastle have a lack of cover at centre-back and Schar would improve their defensive options considerably.
