Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao endured 72 minutes of Under-21 action for the Red Devils, doing little as they secured a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
Falcao earns a reported £260,000-per-week, and could cost United £43.5 million if they make his loan deal permanent at the end of the season, as per the BBC.
However, that looks an unlikely situation right now. He has made 20 appearances for the United first-team this term, scoring four goals, but he has yet to find the back of the net since the end of January.
Considering he arrived from Monaco intending to lead the line for a rejuvenated United side under Louis van Gaal, his goal return and infrequent appearances have been rightly criticised. Injuries have limited him, and he has not been afforded the chance to play his way back to form, as Robin van Persie has been allowed, but there is no doubt that United will not make use of their right to buy present in his contract.
This was made all the more evident following Falcao’s performance for the Under-21s. He did nothing of note - except block two goal-bound shots from his teammates - and still looked far from full fitness, despite the lower level of competition.
It was a shock to see him named in the line-up, and many people took to Twitter to express the belief that his appearance has all-but marked the end of his Old Trafford career.
We gather some of the best responses to Falcao’s Under-21 appearance here:
Just feel bad for Falcao now. As always, he worked hard tonight, but the touch and sharpness has gone. Not his fault. #MUFC— David Lynch (@DavidLynchMEN) March 10, 2015
This season can't end soon enough for Falcao. I don't think it's the end of his career. Just the end of his career with #MUFC— James Robson (@JamesRobsonMEN) March 10, 2015
According to reporters at the game Khumalo had Falcao in his pocket all game, let's hope it's the same case Sunday should he play .... #COYS— Ricky Sacks™ (@GlobalSpur) March 10, 2015
Falcao off. Genuinely, Carter-Vickers had a more stern test against Chelsea U18s' Solanke last week.— Chris Miller (@WindyCOYS) March 10, 2015
Man united have completely ruined falcao, got him playing for the under 21s and that— Jack Warkcup (@jackwarkcup_) March 10, 2015
