Everton may have been excellent in the Europa League all term, but in domestic football they have been shocking. Out of the cups and fighting relegation is now the reality for their campaign at home.
If they can stay up, which most expect them to do, they need to bring in some new faces to brighten up an ageing dressing room.
One area of the field that needs particular attention is their defence, especially the centre-backs.
John Stones is undoubtedly a class option, but he remains young and prone to errors. Phil Jagielka has struggled this season. It is easy to forget his age and the fact he has suffered some serious knee injuries in his career. Sylvain Distin has lost his pace, which was his saving grace. He is likely to leave when his contract expires in the summer. Meanwhile, Antolin Alcaraz, has never been of the standard necessary.
So a centre back is needed and the player they should be attempting to sign is Fabian Schar of FC Basel.
The Swiss international is out of contract in the summer and is a fantastic defensive option. A composed and modern day centre-back, with a wonderful eye for a pass as well as a fierce tackle, Schar must be a consideration for several top clubs.
He is exactly the type of defender Roberto Martinez needs for his style of play.
Plus, he has proved himself against Everton's Merseyside rivals this season. He shone at Anfield for Basel as the Swiss side secured the 1-1 draw needed to knock Liverpool out and was a rock when they beat Liverpool 1-0 at home.
This scourge of Liverpool, would become a hero for Everton.
