The Manchester United owned midfielder feels Delph is the model player, who all at Villa should be trying to emulate.
He’s revealed what’s impressed him most about Delph since he moved to Villa Park and has also explained why he’s ideal for the long term captaincy role at the club.
“What impresses me more than all that skill and quality is his attitude. He is a top, top pro. He works tremendously hard. He's always first in the door - and the last to leave,” said Cleverley.
“Fabian is a real leader out there. He's a ready-make captain. He's vocal but he leads by example too with his driving performances from midfield.”
Delph’s metal and resolve as a leader in the team is going to be thoroughly tested over the rest of the season, with Villa fighting to try and pull clear of the bottom three in the Premier League.
Tim Sherwood is fresh into his position as the club’s manager and he will be watching players closely before he judges who will be his captain on a long term basis.
Delph should certainly rise to the challenge. The club showed him commitment by giving him the new contract he desired and he should have the motivation and determination to pay back that faith.
He should be looking to lead by example in every game and will be crucial in tense situations, with several players likely to look to him when matches don’t pan out the way Villa will be hoping.
