The North London club have been linked with the Belgian in recent days and could renew a defensive partnership at Spurs.
Tottenham have been linked with a summer approach for Toby Alderweireld in the British media this week, with Spurs said to be keen to tempt the Belgian into a move to White Hart Lane.
With Alderweireld seemingly not part of Diego Simeone’s plans at Atletico Madrid, a summer transfer away from the Spanish capital looks like a real possibility.
Despite the emergence of Eric Dier and improvement by Federico Fazio, centre-half remains an area of concern for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, with the ideal partner for Jan Vertonghen not yet clarified.
Alderweireld clearly has the potential to be a star for Spurs, but there is another reason that a switch to North London could work in the club’s favour.
Alderweireld and Vertonghen played together at Ajax for four seasons and as such already have a good understanding of each other’s game.
With both also featuring in the Belgium national side together, resuming this partnership at White Hart Lane could well be a hasty and effective transition.
As Younes Kaboul looks set to leave Tottenham this summer, Alderweireld would be a substantial upgrade, with his experience of playing alongside Vertonghen a welcome added bonus.
