On the same evening that Manchester United faced Arsenal in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, one of their own was turning out for Sporting Lisbon in the Primeira Liga.
Nani is enjoying a fine loan spell back at his former club, and it was somewhat telling that while the man signed to replace him – Angel Di Maria – saw red at Old Trafford, the Portuguese winger was scoring the winner against Penafiel.
It remains to be seen if Nani has a future at United but there is no doubt his form this season will have got the attention of manager Louis van Gaal.
After all, while Di Maria has faltered since his club-record signing, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists in 26 appearances, Nani has netted 10 times and set up an additional seven.
There may be an argument that both players could ultimately turn out for the same team, with one operating on either flank, but that prospect seems some way off.
Di Maria played well against Arsenal, looking a constant threat and far more like his old self. That was until he laid hands on the referee and was subsequently dismissed.
Nani, on the other hand, scored the winner, something United failed to do in a match they were desperate to triumph in.
