Angel Di Maria’s sending off may have been avoidable and silly but he showed signs of a return to form during Manchester United’s defeat to Arsenal on Monday night.
The Argentine was firstly booked for diving before grabbing referee Michael Oliver’s shirt and immediately seeing a second yellow card.
It was an incident which overshadowed a return to form for the heavily criticised Argentine winger.
Di Maria was lively throughout proceedings, creating United’s equaliser with a tremendous cross which Wayne Rooney connected with to even the scores.
The 27-year-old was at the heart of everything that was good about the Red Devils, as he tormented the Arsenal defence with his pace and dangerous crosses which were whipped in at pace.
It was a welcome return to form for Di Maria and it is a shame for him that the red card, along with former United striker Danny Welbeck’s winner, will be the major talking point after a thoroughly entertaining affair.
United fans will inevitably be disheartened by the result and the red card incident but at least the Argentine showed signs that he is adapting to the English game and can be a major threat in the closing months of the season.
