Sunderland's Development Squad coach has named two players to keep an eye out for.
Sunderland’s Development Squad boss Robbie Stockdale has been quoted by the Sunderland Echo naming two youngsters for fans to keep an eye on.
The young Black Cats were superb as they saw off West Ham yesterday with a 3-0 win and wingers Duncan Watmore and Rees Greenwood impressed their youth coach.
“I thought they were both bright. Duncan is still finding his way. He’s funny, he looks like he’s on his last legs at times and then you suddenly get a burst of energy,” said Stockdale.
“But he’s such a threat, isn’t he? And I think Rees had one of his better games. He’s growing in strength and confidence - we’ve got a couple of players there who are kicking on.”
The pair are some way off getting a first team chance under Gus Poyet, but they are examples of the productivity which can come out of the Sunderland youth ranks.
When the pressure winds down a little bit towards the end of the season, Poyet may throw them into a game off of the bench.
However, with the side fighting to avoid relegation down to the Championship, they’re better served at the moment developing in the youth ranks.
They just need to get their heads down and maintain their consistency.
If they don’t get a chance at senior level in the final couple of weeks, they could secure high profile loan deals away from the club with impressive performances, which will allow them to develop in terms of their first team experience and quality over the course of next season.
