Rooney has had an indifferent campaign as captain of the side, being used in an unfamiliar midfield position throughout most of the season and suffering as a result.
The move to midfield was arguably one made so manager Louis Van Gaal could try to accommodate both Robin Van Persie and loan signing Radamel Falcao into his side. However, he has returned up front recently and has three goals in his last four appearances as a result.
Now, Keown has praised the England captain on his Kicca account.
“Rooney is United's shining light right now, [he’s] the one who plays with fire in his belly,” wrote Keown.
The former defender turned pundit wasn’t as nice about Rooney’s teammate Angel Di Maria though.
The Argentine has suffered an indifferent first season in England since his club record transfer from Real Madrid in the summer, starting brightly but having since faded rapidly, and was sent off against Arsenal.
Several reasons have been given for the star’s decline over the season, with a failure to settle in the country being touted as the biggest problem, while manager Van Gaal has also come in for criticism over his use of the midfielder.
Keown is also one of those blaming the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager.
“Sometimes get the feeling Van Gaal doesn't want to play him,” Keown added about the Argentine.
“[It] looks like they've just turned him into a robotic machine.”
