Manchester United have been linked with a deal to sign Lars Bender, by Spanish newspaper Sport.
The German midfielder is on the radar of Barcelona, but the Catalan club are currently under transfer embargo.
Bender plays for Bayer Leverkusen, where he is regarded as a key player for the side who sit fourth in the Bundesliga.
Their interest could revive that of Arsenal, who The Mail reported last season had seen an offer of £18.5 million rejected.
The 25-year-old is a defensive midfielder, and is a German international. He missed out on the World Cup triumph after having to withdraw from the squad through injury.
He has helped Leverkusen keep four consecutive clean sheets, and leads the team in tackles made per game.
Where is the best move for Bender?
Both United and Arsenal are in need of a defensive midfielder, certainly a top level player like Bender.
The emergence of Francis Coquelin is a positive for Arsenal, but long-term doubts over the futures of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini mean there is still a requirement on their behalf.
At United, manager Louis van Gaal confirmed to SkySports last month he intends on signing a midfielder this coming summer.
The Dutchman wants a creative player who can add to the attacking value of the side, but a destroyer like Bender sitting in the middle can help enable the flair players at the club to hit their stride.
