Former Arsenal star Paul Merson made a surprising selection as he produced a combined Arsenal and Manchester United XI for Sky Sports.
The two massive clubs meet in the FA Cup this evening and Merson suggested that he’d rather have Dutchman Daley Blind protecting his back four than Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin.
“Blind is a class player and just edges Coquelin, while Ashley Young is unlucky not to get in as he's been one of United’s better players,” said Merson.
Coquelin has been in revitalised form since he came back to Arsenal from a loan spell at Charlton earlier in the season.
His performance particularly in the away game against Manchester City, which Arsenal won 2-0, was magnificent.
He provides an authority and aggression in the middle of the team, which is something only he possess and something Arsene Wenger praised in his press conference ahead of the game last week.
Blind is a top quality player who has made a good impact at United following a move from Ajax last summer, but considering Merson’s Arsenal roots, it’s surprising he opted for the Dutchman.
It will be interesting to see which midfielder outperforms the other when the sides meet this evening and whether Merson made the right call.
