Leeds United's young guns made quite a statement with their 5-0 under-21 win on Monday.
Leeds United’s youngsters have made plenty of headlines already this season, with the likes of Alex Mowatt, Lewis Cook, Charlie Taylor and Sam Byram all playing integral roles in Neil Redfearn’s side.
But while supporters at Elland Road get excited about the development of the next generation taking place before their very eyes, another batch of players are doing everything they can to make the step up themselves.
Redfearn’s previous role for Leeds' academy means he knows the club’s teenagers extremely well. But even he may have been surprised with their latest performance, as the club’s under-21s defeated their Huddersfield Town counterparts 5-0 on Monday afternoon.
The Whites put out a strong side which included Dario Del Fabro, Adryan and Chris Dawson, and the players did not disappoint.
Centre-back Del Fabro – who impressed for the first-team against Sunderland earlier this season – opened the scoring, heading in from a corner before Brian Montenegro doubled the advantage.
Things were made easier for Leeds when Huddersfield’s Sondre Tronstrad was sent off for handling inside the area and from the subsequent spot-kick Dawson made it 3-0.
The promising Kalvin Phillips scored a fourth and then Ross Killock added some gloss to proceedings, ensuring an emphatic message was sent to Redfearn.
These young Leeds players have seen what others have done and surely want to following in their footsteps.
Continue like this and they just might.
