Former England midfielder Danny Murphy is backing Derby to be promoted despite a recent blip in results.
Former England midfielder Danny Murphy told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show for talkSPORT that he’s still backing Derby for promotion.
The Rams have suffered a slight blip in their recent results, but Murphy put his beck on the line to back Steve McClaren’s side.
“I thought Derby were odds on, but they’ve suffered a couple of bad results – I still think they’ll go up,” said Murphy.
Derby remain in a good position to make good on Murphy’s prediction and be promoted into the Premier League automatically.
The Rams are one of four sides at the top of the table on 66 points, with key players set to come back into the team after injury.
There were signs of improvement over the weekend against Birmingham although McClaren will not be pleased with the way his team failed to see out a 2-0 lead.
If Derby can be consistent over the rest of the season, they should consolidate in one of the top two positions and they have the infrastructure to cope if they are promoted into the top flight.
The real challenge for the Rams is going to be how they respond if another side lays down a marker and starts to pull away from the pack.
Will they rise to the challenge and chase that team down or will they slip away from the security of automatic promotion?
