Arjen Robben: Manchester United would be 'first option’ for transfer

Ex-Chelsea star Arjen Robben has said that he would happily sign for Manchester United if he left Bayern Munich.

Robben has a well-known admiration for United boss Louis van Gaal, and he has told the Mail that the Red Devils would be his ‘first option’ if he ever leaves Bayern Munich.

It was Van Gaal who brought Robben to the Bundesliga, signing him from Real Madrid, having also turned out for PSV and Chelsea.

Considered one of the best players in the world, the 31-year-old has been linked with a transfer to Old Trafford continuously since van Gaal’s appointment in the summer, but a move has yet to occur.

The Guardian claim that the winger could be heading to United in the summer, as Van Gaal looks for a big overhaul in the playing squad, but it now appears as if Robben has no desire to leave the Bundesliga at this moment in time.

The Dutch international is currently the second highest goalscorer in the Bundesliga, with 17 strikes in 20 games, despite not being an out-and-out forward.

Renowned for his one-footedness, Robben has built a reputation as a player impossible to defend against, despite his limitations, and, on current form, any club would be delighted to sign him.

United could be considered favourites for his signature, despite his current happiness at Bayern, and Robben himself has said that the Red Devils would be his ‘first option’ for a transfer if he ever desired to leave Munich.

Speaking to the Mail, he said: “The life I have with my family is so good, the team has been successful. That is why I stay [in Germany].

“If things were not going so well, if I was not enjoying it, maybe that [joining United] would be the first option. But he [van Gaal] respects my situation. He knows I am happy.”

Although there are no indications that Robben ever intends to leave Bayern, the knowledge that United would be his first choice club will surely increase the optimism that the Dutch superstar could soon be turning out on the famous Old Trafford turf.
