Merson: Forget Alexis Sanchez, this is Arsenal's danger man

Paul Merson has been looking ahead to Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Manchester United.

Outspoken Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson says Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud is their danger man, labelling the forward underrated and key to the Gunners success in his blog for the Daily Star,

The Gunners head into their FA Cup clash with Manchester United on Monday coming off the back of two important Premier League victories, following their poor result against Monaco in the Champions League.

It was a night to forget for the North Londoners and especially striker Giroud who endured a torrid match, missing a hatful of chances before leaving the pitch to ironic cheers.

Nonetheless, the French international has seemingly bounced back well and Merson believes Arsene Wenger’s men stand a much better chance of defeating United if they play to his strengths.

“Wayne Rooney is United’s biggest danger man. For Arsenal it’s Olivier Giroud. He missed chances against Monaco but never hid, even when he was booed off,” Merson explained.

“I think he’s underrated. Arsenal don’t win without him and he’s now got five goals in five games. He’s bang in form and has bounced back since Monaco.”

“If they play to his strengths, he will cause United problems – but anybody would right now because their defence is a shambles!”

Giroud has been in excellent goal scoring form this season, finding the net ten times in the Premier League in just 12 starts.

The former Montpellier man missed much of the season due to an injury layoff and his return to action has coincided with the Gunners’ good form.

There is no fluke about the North Londoners’ form improving the moment Giroud returned to the line-up – Wenger’s side are much more potent and comfortable with him leading the line.

However, the 28-year-old can’t afford to endure another evening similar to the Monaco disaster if the Emirates outfit wish to triumph at Old Trafford and edge closer to retaining the FA Cup trophy.
