Norwich boss rules out former Leeds United hero Luciano Becchio despite Lewis Grabban injury

Alex Neil will not be playing the Argentine this season.

This week Norwich City were dealt a massive blow in their hunt for promotion to the Premier League.

Summer signing from Bournemouth, Lewis Grabban, has scored 12 goals this season and had scored five goals in his last five games. But he picked up a knock against Ipswich Town in last weekend's 2-0 win over their local rivals. On Thursday he underwent surgery on his ankle and no time-scale has yet been given regarding his return.

The club do, however, have plenty of striking cover. Cameron Jerome and Gary Hooper are great options, as is former Leeds United striker Luciano Becchio.

However, the Argentine, who signed from Leeds in controversial circumstances back in January 2013, has never been a hit in Norfolk.

He has not played for The Canaries since a Capital One Cup tie against Crawley Town in August 2014 and has played just 16 games for the club.

In fact the striker has not played a game since he was on loan at Rotherham in September 2014.

So now, with Grabban out, Becchio might have been hoping to get an opportunity in the Norwich first-team. That will not be happening. Alex Neil confirmed yesterday, as reported by Orange, that he will not be using the striker for the remainder of the campaign:

"No, I don't think Luc will come into my thoughts at the moment. He hasn't played nearly any football in quite a bit of time so to get up to speed in the first team and make an impact would be tough."

It is certainly a fall from grace since he left Leeds. Prior to joining Norwich he had scored 19 goals for Leeds that season and was a potent threat throughout his five-year career at Elland Road.

Now he faces the possibility of exile at Carrow Road for the foreseeable future and must wish that he had stayed at Leeds.
