The stats behind Wigan’s smash-and-grab victory over Norwich

Norwich City’s six-game unbeaten run came to an end as they lost 1-0 at home to relegation threatened Wigan Athletic on Wednesday.

Wigan Athletic moved a step closer to survival after grinding out a 1-0 victory at high-flying Norwich City.

Kim Bo-Kyung scored the crucial goal as the Latics won their first game following Dave Whelan’s resignation as chairman of the club earlier in the week.

With their backs to the wall, Malky Mackay’s men held out the rampant Canaries to hold onto a precious three points which sees them move to within six points of safety.

For the Canaries, it was a missed opportunity as they failed to move level on points with Derby County, who currently occupy the final automatic promotion place in the Championship.

Here are some of the key stats from Wigan’s smash-and-grab victory:

  • Norwich had quadruple the amount of attempts on goal as their opponents, with Wigan managing just three shots all game.
  • The Canaries had 61% of the possession and attempted 30 crosses.
  • Wigan completed just 51% of their attempted passes and only entered the Norwich box four times, creating just one chance on goal.
  • The visitors made 41 clearances, 27 interceptions and 38 tackles.
