Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld ahead of Southampton this summer, according to a report in the Telegraph.
Spurs are looking to add a new centre-back to their ranks at the end of the year and they believe that Alderweireld could be the perfect addition.
As things stand, the Belgium international is apparently set to sign for Southampton in a £6.8 million transfer, due to a clause in his contract, but Atletico do have an option to buy this stipulation out.
It means that if Spurs were to offer them around £10 million for the defender, the La Liga club could be prepared to take up this option, as they would be able to make a greater profit on his sale if the Lilywhites took him.
Impact for Tottenham?
The arrival of Alderweireld would be an eye-catching addition at White Hart Lane.
Comfortable in possession, quick across the ground and commanding in the air, Alderweireld boasts of all the attributes that Mauricio Pochettino looks for in a defender and he would be the perfect partner for Jan Vertonghen.
Vertonghen and Alderweireld know each other well from international duty and that should make the transition period slightly easier for the versatile defender, if he were to move to north London.
Impact for Southampton?
Losing out on Alderweireld would be a major frustration for Southampton as he plays such an important role in their side.
The Saints are determined to avoid a repeat of last summer - where they lost most of their major stars - this time around and they will be hoping that Alderweireld has enjoyed his time at St. Mary's enough that he will be convinced to stay there for longer, despite the increased attention in his services.
