Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in signing Paris Saint Germain full-back Gregory van der Wiel, according to TalkSPORT.
Van der Wiel is one of the standout players in Ligue 1 and Newcastle are reportedly hoping to bring him to St. James' Park in the summer.
Their hopes have been boosted today as the Dutchman's agent, Mino Raiola, has revealed that Van der Wiel's future is very much up in the air.
"We are currently discussing for a possible extension [at PSG]," he said. "But we have not yet found an agreement.
"I hope that it will come, because there are a lot of interested clubs in England, Spain, Italy and Germany.
Van der Wiel's current deal expires in the summer of 2016 and if he has not committed his future by the end of the season, then Newcastle may hope to land him in a cut-price deal.
The Magpies have strong links in France and they clearly feel that Van der Wiel is a player that could enhance their starting line-up considerably.
Newcastle are desperately short of numbers in defence and it is likely that they will be looking to bring in some new additions in this area once the transfer window re-opens.
Whether they would be able to persuade Van der Wiel to join them remains to be seen, as he would be a more high-profile recruit than many of the new additions they have made in recent transfer windows.
