Lewis Holtby and Rafael van der Vaart send message to Spurs fans on Facebook

The pair are now plying their trade in Germany for Hamburg.

Rafael van der Vaart was one of the first players sold by Andre Villas-Boas at Tottenham Hotspur as the Dutchman’s mercurial style did not fit in with the AVB philosophy.

However, when Harry Redknapp was in charge, RVDV became something of a cult hero at White Hart Lane. His enigmatic presence on the football pitch would always ally him to the fans - and the passion in which he played the game was also a joy to behold.

But the bargain buy from Real Madrid was simply not the Portuguese’s cup of tea - and was allowed to re-join former team Hamburg SV in 2012.

Last summer, he was joined by another player with Tottenham links, as Lewis Holtby arrived on loan for the season. The talented German never quite settled in north London following a move from Schalke 04 in 2013, and spent half of last season at Fulham.

But while his time at Tottenham appears to be coming to an end he is still fond of the club, as is RVDV - despite his sudden exit in 2012.

Last night, as confirmed by Holtby's official Facebook page, the pair got together to reminisce about their times at White Hart Lane - even though they never actually played together in North London.

Two players of great mercurial talent, who never had a long-term future at Tottenham - a warning to plenty of the current underachievers at the club that Spurs will swing the axe if necessary.
