Keown: I don't understand West Ham fans over Sam Allardyce

Sam Allardyce Press Conference Disappointed 12/02/2014

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has explained why he's confused by West Ham United fans.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has told the Daily Mail he doesn’t understand the West Ham fans calling for Sam Allardyce’s head.

Allardyce’s contract with the Hammers expires at the end of this season and fans who believe he’s not the man who can drive the side forward, will be hoping that he doesn’t get an extended deal.

However, Keown has implied that overall, Big Sam has done a good job with the Hammers since he took control of the club.

“I don’t get it with their fans, I don’t get what they’re really looking for. The trouble is the side occasionally provides ammunition for Sam’s detractors,” said Keown.

“The current run puts him under pressure, but I feel what they have done overall is encouraging for the club.”

Allardyce is one of the most experienced managers currently working in the Premier League.

He may not have the same tactical expertise as someone like Jose Mourinho, but he has a very particular way of playing and is effective utilising the strengths West Ham have.

The argument against keeping him on at the club is the doubt over whether he can turn West Ham into a top six side as they move to the Olympic Stadium in the near future.

That doubt over his tactical ability and doubt over whether he can attract a certain calibre of player to the club work against him.

However, West Ham have had a good season and he’s done well to convince players like Alex Song to come to Upton Parka when the Barcelona owned player could have gone to a huge European side.

It will be interesting to see which direction the club heads in with Allardyce’s future and how he responds over the summer if he’s kept on.
