Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has been quoted by the Shields Gazette describing a determined mentality that all of his teammates should adopt at St James’ Park.
The Argentine made his return to the Newcastle side earlier this week following a battle against cancer and has stressed how he focused himself when he was out of the team.
“My mentality was to get my fitness and be involved. I wanted to be positive and improve,” said Gutierrez.
“I didn’t just want to train – I wanted more day by day. I did my best in training to get time on the pitch.”
Magpies manager John Carver would have a much easier job if all of his players showed exactly the same level of determination to succeed as the team chase a top eight place.
While Gutierrez’s return against Manchester United was significant, he’s still got a lot of work to do before he can force his way into the starting line-up.
Carver introduced him to the game earlier this week as a replacement for Ryan Taylor. He filled in at left-back, but that’s not his best position.
He’ll want to make a difference down either wing in his best position but to do that, he’s got to force his way into the line-up and then play well when he’s given a chance.
Newcastle don’t play again until they meet Everton on March 15 and Gutierrez and his teammates should be knocking on the door for starting places in that game over the next nine days.
