Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that Aston Villa need to get 33 points to survive in the Premier League.
Villa are currently 17th in the league table with 25 points from 28 matches, just three points above the relegation zone.
The Villans are among a whole host of clubs who are trying to avoid the drop to the Championship at the end of the season.
Leicester City, Burnley and Queens Park Rangers are the bottom three teams at the moment, while Sunderland, Hull City and Everton are within six points of the drop zone.
Even Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion are not entirely safe, as they are just eight points clear of QPR, who are third from bottom and have a game in hand.
Villa got a confidence boost on Tuesday when they defeated West Brom 2-1 at home in the Premier League.
Former England international Merson believes that the win could prove to be crucial and has outlined the number of more points Tim Sherwood’s side need to avoid relegation.
“They (Villa) have got some hard games coming up,” Merson told Sky Sports on Thursday. “That was a big, big football match, beating West Brom.
“As soon as you get out of the bottom three, psychologically it is a big thing. I look at the teams in the bottom , and I think that 32, 33 points keep you up this season. I really think it will be tight.”
If Merson is right, then Villa need eight more points to secure their Premier League status for next season.
That’s two wins and two draws from 10 games.
