Arsenal’s Mathieu Flamini leads league in midfield passing stat

The French enforcer has completed 91.8 per cent of his passes this season; the most for a midfielder in the league.

Following the return of Francis Coquelin from loan, Arsenal enforcer Mathieu Flamini’s place in Arsene Wenger’s side is under threat.

The experienced French midfielder has struggled with injuries this term and as such has only started 15 Premier League games in 2014-15.

Despite not being a constant in the North London side’s starting XI, the accuracy of Flamini’s passing when he is included cannot be questioned.

As shown in the stat below, the former AC Milan bruiser has the highest pass accuracy of any midfielder in the Premier League this season to have attempted to find a team-mate on 500 occasions or more.

There is no doubt that Flamini will play it safe more often than not, with a considerable percentage of those 91.8 per cent of completed passes short in nature and either going back or sideways.

Despite this, there is a value in keeping possession and with Arsenal possessing so many creative and attack-minded players, a solid option like Flamini is an under-rated asset.

It will be interesting to see Wenger’s team selection when both Flamini and Coquelin are available to be picked, with the experienced campaigner still possessing attributes that can be important for the Gunners in their hunt for a top-four finish.
