96% Pass Accuracy, 3 Chances Created: Did Leeds make a mistake loaning out midfielder Michael Tonge?

With a lack of cover in midfield, were Leeds too premature in loaning out Michael Tonge?

While Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn is pushing to sign experienced midfielders on loan, it should not be forgotten that the club have one playing presently for Millwall.

Michael Tonge was loaned to the Lions in January, and has been a regular starter for the relegation battlers since signing.

Tonge is not Leeds or Millwall's saviour, he is very much what he is at this stage of his career, and that should not be seen as a bad thing.

He is a capable, experienced Championship midfielder, who if asked to cover, will not let the side down. Leeds are now in a position with Rudolph Austin injured, and their own loan signing Granddi Ngoyi on the sidelines, that they are reliant on teenages Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt to support Luke Murphy, which is fine unless they get injured themselves.

Having Tonge around would have been more than useful, and he showed in Millwall's defeat to Middlesbrough that he still has plenty to offer.

Tonge completed 96 per cent of his passes, winning three of five tackles attempted, and could easily have had a decisive impact on the game by creating three goalscoring opportunities.

With an in form striker like Billy Sharp up front, Tonge's deliveries could have been useful to Leeds with their current injuries, although it seems as though recalling him is not on their radar.

With Ngoyi signed, letting Tonge go seemed fair to him at the time, but the club were at that stage just two injuries away from needing additions, which have now struck.

It may not have been a mistake to loan him out, but Leeds, and many other sides in the Championship may want to consider being more selfish when it comes to recalling players for the benefit of the club.
