The United players were more than pleased to escape from St James' Park with a narrow 1-0 victory.
A last-gasp Ashley Young strike sealed Manchester United a hard-fought 1-0 win in Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at Newcastle United, with several members of the side taking to Twitter after to match to celebrate another step towards a top-four finish.
United were frustrated for most of the match after seeing Newcastle keeper Tim Krul pull off a string of fine saves to keep the scores level, while a controversial spitting incident between Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse overshadowed events in the first-half.
Angel Di Maria’s poor form continued, as he was hauled off before the hour following another lacklustre performance, but there was a more notable substation six minutes later, as fellow Argentine Jonas Gutierrez came on for his first appearance since overcoming testicular cancer.
The visitors were to spoil his evening somewhat, however, as Young capitalised on a late error from Krul following Mehdi Abeid’s backpass to put the ball into an open net and seal all three precious points.
It means a two-point gap remains between fourth-placed United and Southampton in fifth with 10 top-flight fixtures left, and the importance of the result was not lost on goal hero Young, Juan Mata, Daley Blind, David de Gea, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney.
