Reid had been linked with moves to Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, both mentioned in a report by the Daily Mail earlier this week, but the Hammers got him to sign on the dotted line of a new deal, which keeps him at Upon Park until 2021.
The deal makes sense all round with positives created for both the player and the club. The challenge for the player now is to settle down and try to produce his best performances, justifying the massive commitment which has just been made to him.
From the club’s point of view, they keep one of their best players. Reid is someone who will form the spine of the team’s defence for several years and he’s a good player to have helping the younger stars coming into the team.
From the player’s point of view, he’s got the deal he wants. He also has the opportunity to play for a club, which will benefit from increased exposure and capacity at the Olympic Stadium. The revenue will go up and hopefully West Ham can become a European club.
If there has been genuine interest from any club in signing him, they have just made that process substantially more difficult and an awful lot more expensive if any team was thinking about moving in the summer.
It’s the perfect deterrent and should allow the club and the player to focus purely on football over the next few months and not questions regarding whether he would still be at Upton Park for the next campaign.
Here’s what West Ham fans on Twitter had to say about his new contract.

@whufc_official WHU celebrations of Reid's foolishness at signing a new long term deal are a cover-up to the fact that we can't win a game!— Dave Ash (@DaveAsh3) March 5, 2015
How does Winston Reid go from almost leaving #whufc to signing a new 6 and a half year contract? Very strange— Robin Cottle (@RCottlejourno) March 5, 2015
