Ex-Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas told 5Live he believes Manchester United star Angel di Maria needs to learn from Mesut Ozil if he is to become a success in the Premier League.
Di Maria, 27, has come under heavy criticism recently for his performances in the Premier League despite a strong start to life at Old Trafford following his, BBC reported, £59.7 million move from Real Madrid in the summer.
The Argentine has struggled to recapture the form that had United fans raving about ability earlier in the season and has been substituted off in United’s last two games while the scores were still level.
In reflection to his most recent performance for United, against Newcastle on Wednesday night, the 32-year-old BBC presenter questioned the attacker’s body strength and recommended he follow in the footsteps of Arsenal star Mesut Ozil.
"Angel Di Maria is obviously struggling at the moment,’’Jenas told 5Live.
‘’He reminds me of Mesut Ozil at Arsenal, starting like a house on fire and then going downhill. He needs to work on his body strength. That's just what Ozil has done."
Should Di Maria look to follow in Ozil’s footsteps?
The recommendation that Di Maria should use Ozil has an example of how to change his body type is an odd one, and one which may raise many eyebrows.
The German international did have a strong start to life in the Premier League, similar to Di Maria, but has long struggled for any type of a consistency that would suggest he is an example to follow.
The most noticeable difference between the players that tend to succeed in the transition from La Liga to the Premier League is the aggression.
Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez have both had little trouble adjusting to life in England, arguably due to their combative nature, so would be the more suitable example for Di Maria to follow, and arguably Ozil too.
