The AS Roma youngster is currently on loan at Latina.
Reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed today that Newcastle are one of many teams keeping tabs on a talented Italian midfielder, who was extremely close to joining Leeds United in the summer.
He claims that Roma star Federico Viviani has a plethora of team's interested in his signature. The creative midfielder is just 22-years-old and with first-team opportunities bleak at Roma he went out on loan to Serie B side Latina.
He has become one of the best players in the second tier of Italian football and Di Marzio claims that the likes of Newcastle United, Bologna and Palermo are all keen - while Roma want to take him back next season.
Of course this is not the first time he has been linked with a move to England. He came within inches of signing for Championship side Leeds United in the summer.
The club, through Italian owner Massimo Cellino. had plenty of contacts within Italian football and Viviani was identified as a target.
It was reported by the Daily Mail at the end of July that Leeds were ready to 'seal the deal' for the player.
But at the beginning of August Cellino confirmed to Sky Sports that the move was off, citing his demands as the reason behind the collapse of a deal:
"He (Viviani) is not coming. He is a good player, a talented player, but I cannot sign someone like that.
"All last week it was demands about this, demands about that, asking for more and more so eventually I said ‘enough’."
However it seems he could still make his way to England this summer after an impressive campaign in his home country.
Leeds fans must be thinking what if? While Newcastle fans can begin to consider this an excellent transfer target.
