Marcos Rojo was handed a start at left-back as Manchester United stood firm to record a 1-0 victory away at Newcastle.
The clean sheet had a lot to do as ever with goalkeeper David de Gea, but the summer signing from Sporting Lisbon played his role too.
It was not his best game, looking uncomfortable at times on the left rather than in the centre, but his committed nature saw him give his all in an effort to frustrate Newcastle.
Towards the end of the game he looked to be treading on thin ice, picking up fouls while already on a yellow card, and he was substituted in the 88th minute for Michael Carrick, with Daley Blind moving to left-back.
Moments later United hit the winner through Ashley Young, to seal the three points and keep United in fourth place in the Premier League.
Rojo made six clearances and three tackles, but also gave away four fouls, more than the rest of the United defence did combined.
It was the Argentine's 17th Premier League start of the season, and the fifth of those to be played at left-back.
He has been a reliable figure over the course of the season, but his performance split opinions among fans on Twitter. Here is a look at the reaction to Rojo's display at St James' Park...
Rojo reminds me of another Heinze in the making for us (solid/rough/rugged defending) #mufc— Roy Ikoroha (@RoyIkoroha) March 4, 2015
Rojo proving why I have so many doubts about him tonight. Careless decision making leads to fouls galore and some suicidal passing #MUFC— Ryan Kelly (@rkelly93) March 4, 2015
Another person that played well but unnoticed is/was Marcos Rojo— Oluwadamilare (@Dharey__) March 4, 2015
Rojo is a weak link at LB. So so much better at CB.— ♚ (@BlindsLeftPeg) March 4, 2015
Our defence is such a mess when Rojo is at LB— . (@ConstantRed) March 4, 2015
Never been fond of Rojo as a LB; he's not good enough tactically, shift him to CB, Young LB - Bring in Januzaj. Left-side is a problem.— Az. (@TheNumber10Role) March 4, 2015
Subs win game men! Rojo was tetchy and on a yellow. Reasonable thing?.take him off!..god of soccer will surely reward you!— Philipp Igwe (@PippoIgwe) March 4, 2015
