How Leicester's Twitter-based supporters reacted to the veteran goalkeeper's showing in the 2-0 defeat at the Etihad Stadium.
Leicester City failed to cause an upset in Wednesday night’s Premier League trip to Manchester City, as goals from Blues midfielders David Silva and James Milner kept them four points adrift at the bottom of the table.
Silva put the hosts ahead just before the break, but the three points were not secure until Milner slid in an 88th-minute cross from Jesus Navas to end Leicester’s hopes of a potential comeback.
The visitors did have their chances, with Riyad Mahrez hitting the post 15 minutes before the end, but it was goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer who they mostly had to thank for keeping them within touching distance of Manuel Pellegrini’s side until the death.
Arriving from Chelsea in January on a free transfer as cover for the injured Kasper Schmeichel, the 42-year-old Australian has since made seven total appearances for the club, but his performances in that time haven’t exactly inspired confidence.
Nevertheless, amid calls for Ben Hamer to replace him between the sticks, the veteran shot-stopper proceeded to put in a starring display at the Etihad Stadium, with his seven saves frustrating the home side in their search for a comfortable win.
With Schmeichel nearing a return, the former Middlesbrough man looks set to return to the bench in the coming weeks, but the Twitter reaction among Leicester fans after the match at least shows that he has taken a big step towards earning their trust moving forward.
Back in bed after a trip to the Etihad Stadium. People saying we were unlucky, but truth be told, Schwarzer kept us in that game. #lcfc— Ross Stilgoe (@Ross_Stilgoe) March 5, 2015
Why are people peddling this unlucky #lcfc myth? Schwarzer saved us from a double digit hiding tonight— Paul Crosbie (@paulfcrosbie) March 4, 2015
Schwarzer had a brilliant match. As for everything else; bleurghh. #LCFC— Lucyy-B' (@LucyB_xxx) March 4, 2015
Pearson says we defended well?! How many times did Schwarzer have to pull of acrobatic saves?! Doesn't suggest good defending. Prick #lcfc— Andy Howard (@andyh1884) March 4, 2015
Will be curious to see if people want to blame Schwarzer for the defeat today. He's made some superb saves. #lcfc— Darren Clark (@lanlier) March 4, 2015
Where have all those slagging off Schwarzer disappeared to tonight? #lcfc— Luke (@lmpawley) March 4, 2015
Wanted Hamer to start, but credit where credit's due, Schwarzer has had a cracker! #LCFC— Josh Walker (@JoshWalker100) March 4, 2015
Anyone moaning about Schwarzer now? #lcfc had a stunning game apparently— Chris (@chrisaddison89) March 4, 2015
