Alex Mowatt scored a fantastic goal for Leeds United against Ipswich Town at Elland Road in the Championship on Wednesday.

Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt has admitted to BBC West Yorkshire Sport that he was “gutted” when Marco Silvestri conceded against Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

The Italian goalkeeper was left cursing his luck after allowing a Freddie Sears’s effort to sneak past him and into the Leeds net.

The incident happened in 74th minute of the Championship clash at Elland Road, just three minutes after Mowatt had given the Whites the lead against the Tractor Boys.

It was the 20-year-old midfielder’s sixth goal in 26 league appearances this season, and was one of the best he has scored.

However, Mowatt’s effort from the free kick threatened to be all for nothing when Silvestri conceded just minutes later, and the youngster has admitted that he was disappointed to see the 24-year-old make that mistake.

“I was gutted, but then we ran off and scored,” the youngster told BBC West Yorkshire Sport. “It all happened so quickly and they got the penalty, and Marco saved us really.”

Silvestri did indeed go from villain to hero, as he kept out Daryl Murphy’s penalty seven minutes from full time.

The Italian is one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship, but he has made some costly mistakes for Leeds this campaign, as shown in the Opta Stats table below.

But in the end, everything turned out okay for Leeds, who have once again defeated a promotion-chasing side.
