Leeds United boss Neil Redfearn defends Marco Silvestri

Leeds United goalkeeper Marco Silvestri made a mistake against Ipswich Town in the Championship on Wednesday but then saved a penalty.

Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn has suggested to Sky Sports that he is not too concerned with the mistake from Marco Silvestri against Ipswich Town.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper was at fault for Ipswich’s goal at Elland Road in the Championship clash on Wednesday.

The Italian failed to keep out Freddie Sears’s effort in the 74th minute and saw the Tractor Boys make it 1-1.

However, Silvestri atoned for his mistake seven minutes from time when he saved a penalty from Daryl Murphy.

Leeds went on to win the encounter 2-1, and Redfearn was pleased with the overall performance of his goalkeeper, making it clear that the 2014 summer signing will always have his full support.

“With goalkeepers if you make a mistake, it's a goal," the Englishman told Sky Sports. "If you make a mistake at work four people see it. In football, 20,000 people see it.

“Marco is a top young keeper, who won us the game at Middlesbrough a week ago with half-a-dozen top-class saves.

“The message is that I'm there for him. The penalty save is something else.”

It is great of Redfearn to show his full support to Silvestri, who will be more relieved than anything to have saved the late penalty.

Although the Italian is one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship, he has made some costly errors this season, as shown in the Opta Stats table below.

However, all players make mistakes and, as Redfearn points out, a goalkeeper’s error is often more highlighted than others.
