Former Liverpool and Chelsea cult figure Raul Meireles misses an absolute sitter in Turkish Cup

The Portuguese midfielder scuffed his shot wide with an open goal in front of him.

During his time in the UK with Chelsea and Liverpool Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles certainly built up a reputation as something of a combative and committed individual.

Indeed he is still thought of rather fondly by some fans of both teams for his extravagant style, bizarre hairstyles and tattooed physique.

Meireles has since moved on to Turkey - where he plays for Fenerbahce. His time in Istanbul has been marred by controversy. He received an initial 11-game ban (reduced to four on appeal) for allegedly spitting at a referee in 2012 - quite topical considering the actions of Jonny Evans and Papiss Cisse last night.

However, he also had a shocking moment last night, although was missing a sitter rather than being a spitter.

Fenerbahce took on Mersin in the Turkish Cup last night and won, goals from Diego and Moussa Sow proving enough for a 2-1 victory.

But it could have been three were it not for a horrible miss from the Liverpool and Chelsea cult figure.

He received the ball with an empty net gaping in front of him. However, he scuffed his shot wide in embarrassing scenes.

In his defence the ball was slightly behind him, and on his left foot, but for a professional football to miss from there is truly a travesty.
