Ex-international believes Leeds spell a key part of Tottenham star's success

Former Celtic defender Darren O'Dea has praised Tottenham winger Andros Townsend's progress, a former teammate of his at Leeds.

Harry Kane's breakthrough at Tottenham this season is no doubt of interest to Championship sides Millwall and Norwich who had him on loan before his development accelerated this season.

He is not the only Spurs player to tread a similar path, with England international Andros Townsend also a player who has spent time in the Football League.

Townsend spent time with seven different clubs outside the Premier League, before a spell with QPR in the top flight.

One player who played alongside him with two clubs is Blackpool defender Darren O'Dea, who was a teammate of his at Leeds United and Ipswich Town.

Watching Townsend score a magnificent solo goal in Wednesday night's Premier League win over Swansea City, O'Dea took to Twitter to praise the importance of the 23-year-old's spell on loan at both sides.

There may have been extra poignancy in his performance last night, as at the same time Leeds and Ipswich were facing off, with the Tractor Boys losing 2-1 at Elland Road.

Three years ago Leeds beat Ipswich 3-1 at the stadium, with O'Dea and Townsend both in the starting line-up.

Townsend played seven times for Leeds, scoring once, and netting one goal in 16 games for Ipswich. His other loan spells came at Leyton Orient, Yeovil, MK Dons, Watford, Millwall, and Birmingham.

This year Tottenham have Alex Pritchard on loan at Brentford, who has netted eight goals, including a winner at Elland Road, and he appears next to follow in the winger's footsteps.
