Carver gives reason why Newcastle's 25-year-old star is struggling for form

Emmanuel Riviere has not scored a Premier League goal for Newcastle United since joining last summer.

John Carver has told the Chronicle that Emmanuel Riviere's struggles to score stem from the fact that his confidence is so low.

Riviere still does not have a Premier League goal to his name, despite making 15 appearances for Newcastle in England's top flight.

It is a woeful record and Carver believes that he is now starting to put too much pressure on himself, so he is snatching at chances.

“Sometimes with Manu, the problem is because he hasn’t scored for so long, he is trying to be too sure instead of just putting his foot through it from that distance," Carver said.

Riviere was brought to Newcastle last summer and was expected to be the man to fire them to success this season.

The Daily Mail reported that Riviere set the Magpies back £6 million and he has failed to justify that price-tag so far, with both his goals coming in a League Cup fixture against Crystal Palace.

It has meant that both Ayoze Perez and Papiss Cisse have jumped ahead of him in the pecking order at St. James' Park and there are question marks beginning to emerge over his future.

Newcastle have already given Riviere plenty of opportunities and unless he can somehow start hitting the back of the net between now and May, talk of a move away from Tyneside is sure to be rife once the transfer window re-opens.
