Liverpool secured a comfortable 2-0 home win over Burnley on Wednesday night, as Clarets striker Danny Ings failed to get on the scoresheet in match which had been billed as his Anfield audition in the build-up.
Jordan Henderson, who was standing in as captain for the injured Steven Gerrard, smashed in a 20-yard strike to give Liverpool the lead on the half-hour, before Daniel Sturridge sealed the result nine minutes after the break with his first goal since the final day of January.
A summer transfer target for the Reds, per the likes of the Daily Mail, Ings had a relatively quiet night for the visitors, although he did have a penalty appeal turned down in the first-half after going down in the box under pressure from Henderson.
The 22-year-old front man is out of contract in the summer and, having proven his Premier League credentials with nine goals in 25 top-flight games this season, the likes of Brendan Rodgers are understandably said to be keen to swoop for his signature.
Nevertheless, having managed just one shot over the course of his 89 minutes on the pitch before going off with a knock, reaction on Twitter to his showing from both Burnley and Liverpool fans was far from positive.
Cant believe Ings is gonna be our top target for the summer #LFC— Pedro J. Salazar C. (@ppedrossalazar) March 5, 2015
Danny Ings' audition for a Liverpool contract went well. He probably did enough to get offered one from them #twitterclarets— Howard Tattersall (@HowardTatts) March 4, 2015
Ings? Hmm. On tonight performance you'd have to say no. We didn't give them much and they hardly attacked so little chance to impress. #LFC— Brandon Jones (@Brantanomobay) March 5, 2015
And Danny Ings showed very little his effort and work rate looked very out of sorts #twitterclarets— Paul Crowther (@claretwibbo) March 4, 2015
Does Ings know how to pass the ball!? Like a player on FIFA that is stuck on sprint...#twitterclarets— Jamie-Lee (@jamiea94) March 4, 2015
You'd think Ings would be playing out of his skin hoping to get a move to LFC bit based on tonight's match we should NOT go in for him #LFC— Darren beanie Healy (@darrenlh81) March 4, 2015
Real disappointing few days for Burnley. Flat against Swansea and outclassed by a very good Liverpool. Now Ings is injured. #twitterclarets— Rob Murphy (@murphyrob) March 4, 2015
and yeah, please no Ings.. just an english Borini with a run of form #LFC— Sandip Natt (@Scouser_Sunny) March 4, 2015
Made it too easy for Liverpool, Ings injured as well :/ #twitterclarets— Chris Rawlinson (@ChrisRawlinson4) March 4, 2015
Tbh if #LFC do get ings in the summer, wouldn't mind at all, would suit our style to our tee— Matthew Ward (@MattWard99) March 4, 2015
