The evidence Derby need Bent and Martin back as soon as possible

Derby County struggled to cope without Darren Bent and Chris Martin last night.

Derby County manager Steve McClaren was put in a difficult position for the game against Brighton last night due to an injury to Darren Bent.

Bent’s absence, alongside Chris Martin, left the Rams boss without either of his first choice centre forwards.

In came Johnny Russell and Jamie Ward to try and help fill the void and the stats suggest they struggled, big time.

Russell failed to get a shot away over the course of the game while playing just 12 accurate passes, which is a very low number even if he is a forward.

In his defence, he played for just 45 minutes of the defeat against Fulham last weekend, which suggests that he lacked a bit of sharpness last night which can only come with playing games.

Ward fared slightly better, at least managing a couple of attempts on goal, but his passing stats were also way down on where McClaren would like them to be.

The result and performance showed how much the side misses the presence of Martin and the experience of Bent and things need to be moved back on track quickly if the Rams are to retain hope of being promoted this season.
