In 2013 Tottenham lost star player Gareth Bale, but were handsomely compensated for his services by Real Madrid.
They went on a spending spree to strengthen the squad in his absence, the two most expensive signings being those of Roberto Soldado from Valencia and Erik Lamela from Roma.
Neither has set White Hart Lane aflame in their time in London. Lamela spent most of last season injured and has only shown flashes of his talent this term. Soldado, meanwhile, seems incapable of scoring unless it is a penalty.
The pair are, however, good friends at the club and March 4 happens to be Lamela's birthday. The Argentine is turning 23 today and Soldado has sent him a birthday message with a twist.
He made it clear that he hopes tonight can act as a birthday gift for the attacking midfielder.
A word of warning, however, for Lamela. If he is hoping for a win this evening, it is probably best to not count on Soldado to score the winning goal.
The Spaniard is bang out of form at the moment and has not scored a goal in the Premier League since November.
Harry Kane is far more likely to give him the gift he is after.
