Gus Poyet has told Sunderland's official site that he was surprised by Jack Rodwell in their match against Hull City last night.
Rodwell was not expected to last for the entire 90 minutes, but his fitness levels were surprisingly high and he was able to play the whole match.
It turned out to be crucial too, as Rodwell's late goal rescued an important point for them at the KC Stadium, and Poyet was delighted with his impact.
"It was great for Jack to get the goal and to be honest I’m delighted he was able to play for the full 90 minutes - I didn’t expect him to play the full game.
"The goal is great for him and he can create those chances so it’s a confidence boost for him."
Before this match Rodwell had been out for a prolonged period of time with injury, but his recovery appears to have gone well and he will be hoping this performance keeps him in the starting line-up for the foreseeable future.
The England international may not have enjoyed the best debut season at the Stadium of Light, but he is still an important player for them.
Rodwell has a physical presence that most of Sunderland's other midfield options do not have and this could be crucial for them in their fight for survival.
His goal last night was certainly priceless as it lifted them four points clear of the bottom three and Poyet will be hoping that Rodwell can now push on and put in performances of this quality on a consistent basis.
