Carver confident Cisse can reach ambitious target this season

Newcastle United manager John Carver has backed Papiss Cisse to reach a goalscoring landmark this season.

Newcastle United manager John Carver has told the Northern Echo he’s confident that Papiss Cisse can reach 20 goals with the Magpies this season.

He has 11 for the club so far and the boss feels his strike rate and ratio is good enough to see him through to the impressive target.

“He's on 11 goals now, and we've got 11 games left. If he keeps scoring every 84th minute, yes we have (got a 20-goal striker),” said Carver.

“He's a typical striker where he had that exceptional season and everything he hit, hit the net. The following season he found it tough.”

If Cisse does make it to 20 goals then the Magpies stand a great chance of breaking into the top eight by the end of the season.

He’ll need a bit of luck along the way but if he pulls it off, it will do his confidence the world of good.

The issue for the manager is keeping him fresh and tweaking things in terms of the attacking players around him, which present him with frequent opportunities to score in big games.

If Carver can get the balance right and if the creativity flows through the team, there’s no reason he shouldn’t get there.

The major issue is his fitness and whether he can stay in good condition over the rest of the season.

The paper states that he’s carrying an issue with his knee, which threatens his consistency because he could be in and out of the side. However, if he stays fit, he’s got the skill needed to make the difference for the Magpies up front.
