Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Tom Cleverley's performance against West Brom

How Aston Villa's Twitter-based supporters reacted to the on-loan Manchester United midfield's performance in 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion.

Christian Benteke’s late penalty gave Aston Villa a 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night and moved the club out of the Premier League’s bottom three in the process.

The West Midlands rivals looked set to share the points at Villa Park after Saido Berahino’s 66th-minute header cancelled out Gabriel Agbonlahor’s first-half strike, but there was to be late drama.

With just seconds remaining, West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster brought down an advancing Matthew Lowton in the box, allowing Benteke to score from the spot in front of the Holte End and hand Tim Sherwood his first three points as Villa manager.

There were several encouraging individual performances from the home side on the night, with Manchester United loanee Tom Cleverley one of those to put in a much-improved display in Sherwood’s third game in charge.

The midfielder hasn’t lived up to expectations since arriving on a season-long deal in September, despite making 26 total appearances, with his continued presence in the line-up even leading to suggestions that the since-departed Paul Lambert was being forced to start him due to a clause in his loan agreement.

He hit rock-bottom after being booed off in last month’s 2-1 home defeat to Chelsea amid growing criticism from the claret and blue faithful, but it now looks as if a managerial change might just helped him turn a corner.

Involved in the opening goal with a ball into Benteke to assist Agbonlahor’s opener, he improved from there to deliver an all-action midfield showing before going off with 13 minutes to go, and the club’s Twitter-based fans were full of praise for his contributions at the final whistle.
